When members of country supergroup Alabama needed a replacement guitarist for a scheduled concert that was expected to draw 70,000 fans, they knew just who to call. With Randy Owens out of commission due to illness, the band relied on Paul Carrol Binkley to play during June Jam, the show that Alabama gives yearly in its hometown of Ft. Payne, AL. The band's confidence in Binkley was well-placed. The highly regarded Nashville musician frequently contributes his talents on acoustic guitar to live shows and recordings for Music City acts, such as the Lorrie Morgan tour that prominently placed him and his guitar at the center of an orchestra. In addition to backing other performers and groups, Binkley also records as a solo artist. His albums include Flying Colors, Passages for Acoustic Guitar, Closer to Home, and Silent Serenade. For Flying Colors, he contributed more than the music when he took a hands-on approach to the album's cover art. Thanks to input from his artist wife, Binkley devised a method that allowed him to craft a one-of-a-kind cover for each CD, and the guitarist hand-numbered each one.
Binkley’s formal education includes training from Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music, Austin Peay State University, and Boston's Berklee College of Music. In addition to his work on the acoustic guitar, Binkley also composes. He twice took home top honors in the Young Composers Competition, and has performed at both the Atlanta Arts Festival and the Mid-South Jazz Festival. His works have been performed by such organizations as Connecticut's Eugene O'Neill Institute, Atlanta's Alliance Theatre, and the Nashville Dance Project. He has played on such television programs as the Grand Ole Opry, Church Street Station, and Nashville Now. He is affiliated with the Nashville Children's Theater, the Mockingbird Theatre, and the National Shakespeare Festival, and has put in time with the organizations as musical director.
